Greetings to all members of The Combustion Institute on behalf of the Organizing Committee of the 39th International Symposium on Combustion. We are looking forward to an exciting meeting; we hope the vast majority of you will be able to attend the event in person, now that most of the travel restrictions and precautions associated with COVID-19 have been lifted. We have planned some wonderful events for you, including an excursion to the top of Grouse Mountain, and a reception at the world-renowned Vancouver Aquarium - which we'll have all to ourselves for the evening!

Vancouver is a wonderful city to visit with so many outdoor activities available in the summer. The Vancouver Convention Centre is situated at the north end of downtown, right on the shore of Coal Harbour offering stunning views of the North Shore Mountains, Stanley Park and Burrard Inlet. Canada Place - which is where the 2022 ICS will be hosted - also houses the downtown float plane terminal (from which one can take flights to Vancouver Island - including Victoria - for day-trips or even for extended tours pre- or post-Symposium) and the home port for Vancouver-Alaska cruises. It is directly on the Sea-Wall, on which one can walk, run, bike or even roller-blade for literally dozens of kilometers right next to the Pacific Ocean.
A short walk south along Burrard Street will bring you to Robson Street, where there are many upscale shops. The Coal Harbour area (home to the Convention Centre) is also replete with a wide variety of restaurants, ranging from food-courts with cheap, fast grub between sessions, to fine dining much like the neighbouring areas of historic Gastown, Chinatown and the West End. There are also several nearby brewpubs, including The Tap House and Steamworks.
Incidentally, I strongly urge each of you to travel to downtown Vancouver from the airport using Skytrain. Most of the hotels are a short walk from the Waterfront terminus. Vancouver has an excellent public transit system that connects you with dozens of great places to visit during your time here.
Again, we are looking forward to seeing many of you in person after these last two, hard years!

39th ISOC Welcome Reception
After the need to hold the previous symposium as a virtual event, we look forward to once again meeting with friends and colleagues in person. The Combustion Institute will welcome participants to the 39th Symposium during the Welcome Reception and Opening Ceremony on Friday, 24 July starting at 18:00. Appetizers and drinks will be served as attendees mingle and connect with old and new colleagues.

Hottel Lecture
Lund University's Dr. Marcus Aldén will open the 39th Symposium with his Hottel Lecture entitled, "Spatially resolved laser/optical diagnostics of combustion processes: From fundamentals to practical applications." A Professor of Combustion Physics, Dr. Aldén has been a professor at Lund University since 1991, and served as Head of the Division from 1991 to 2020. We are honored to have Dr. Aldén deliver this keynote presentation. |

The 39th Symposium will feature a number of distinguished invited presenters to share their knowledge through the daily Plenary Lectures and Topical Reviews. |

Industry Perspective Roundtables
In recent years, the International Symposium on Combustion and The Combustion Institute have seen the increased presence and participation of prominent industry representatives. Because of this, we are excited to have two roundtables scheduled that are filled with successful and knowledgeable industry professionals.

Farewell Reception
The Symposium's Farewell Reception, to be held in the Vancouver Convention Centre's award-winning West Building on Friday, 29 July starting at 17:30, offers beautiful views of the Vancouver waterfront. This informal gathering allows friends and colleagues to say their goodbyes and well wishes before heading home. The reception will feature light fare and drinks, and is accessible for all registered delegates and registered accompanying guests.

First Nations of Canada
Vancouver is located on the traditional territories of three Local First Nations: The Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh. Vancouver has the third-largest urban aboriginal population in Canada, and these Local First Nations are largely recognized as "hosts" to the cities and towns that now occupy what was originally their territory. |

The effects of COVID-19 have impacted everyone, including the businesses and people of Vancouver. We are thrilled to be able to meet again in person and add to the re-invigoration of services and the community of Vancouver. Registration for the Symposium will remain open throughout the event.
In the spirit of sustainability, we will be using the web app "Chime" to manage the information for the 39th Symposium. Programs will not be printed but will be accessible from your PC, tablet, or smart phone. More information about the app, including access, will be sent to registrants before the start of the Symposium.

Aquarium and Stanley Park
Since opening in 1956, the Vancouver Aquarium has welcomed more than 40 million guests from around the world. As the site of the awards reception, the Vancouver Aquarium will provide an intriguing backdrop for the event.
Not only is the Vancouver Aquarium a breathtaking venue, it is also only a 15 minute walk from Stanley Park. Including a 400-hectare natural West Coast rainforest with views of the water, a Seawall lined by beautiful trees, and much more, Stanley Park is one of Vancouver's most iconic attractions.

Vancouver has been called a "shopper's paradise" due to its extensive list of shopping districts not paralleled by many other cities including:

Dining
In addition to an abundance of shopping destinations, Vancouver possesses no shortage of great eateries for Symposium attendees to enjoy as well. A simple Google search for "dining in Vancouver" yields seemingly endless lists containing all of Vancouver's best restaurants for you to explore.
Also worth highlighting is the Granville Island Public Market, which is featured in one of the Symposium's tour offerings. This market offers many fantastic, freshly-made options among its varied vendors, making it a great option if any attendees choose to embark on the 2 hour Granville Island Market Public Tour.

Pre-Symposium Scientific Workshops
Several ancillary scientific groups will hold pre-Symposium workshops. The following specialty groups have organized meetings:
The Premixed Turbulent Flames (PTF) and The Turbulent Flames (TF) will hold a pre-symposium workshop. The event will take place 22-23 July 2022 at the Coast Coal Harbor Vancouver Hotel.
The International Sooting Flames (ISF) will hold a pre-Symposium workshop. The event will take place 22-23 July 2022 at the Pinnacle Hotel Harbourfront, Vancouver.
The 6th International Flame Chemistry (IFC) workshop will be held online from 15-19 August 2022.
The Cantera workshop will take place 22-23 July 2022 at Northeastern University - Vancouver.

Pre- and Post-Tour Offerings
Exclusive discounted tours are available to delegates and guests of the 39th International Symposium on Combustion. Attendees will have the opportunity to admire the beautiful BC landscape from a different perspective by booking some of Vancouver’s most unique tours.

Volunteer Opportunities
There will also be opportunities to volunteer at the 39th International Symposium on Combustion. Individuals who volunteer will be rewarded for their time and efforts with varying levels of compensation.
Among the available volunteer positions are working with event set up, serving as a room attendant, providing excursion and banquet traffic control, and assisting with WiPP sessions.

Information About Virtual Participation
We understand that visa processing issues and travel restrictions are making it impossible for some registrants to attend the Symposium in person. For these individuals, virtual participation has been made available. If you are experiencing circumstances that prevent you from traveling to Vancouver, please contact combustion.registration@mzevents.it for more information regarding virtual participation.
Regardless of your mode of attendance, all authors will be required to submit a recorded version of their presention prior to the symposium. More information will be sent to identified authors. If you are not able to attend, we do ask that a co-author or suitable alternate deliver the presentation in person. If no one is available to deliver the presentation in person, the recorded version will be broadcast during the scheduled presentation time.

COVID-19 Information
The Combustion Institute remains as concerned about your health and safety as you are. We encourage attendees to practice caution while traveling to, participating in, and returning home from the 39th International Symposium on Combustion. If possible, you should get tested for COVID-19 prior to your departure to Vancouver, and if you experience any symptoms of COVID-19 while at the Symposium, please notify our Executive Administrator, Renny Tassari at renny@combustioninstitute.org. We will have a limited number of masks, no-touch thermometers, and rapid tests available on site if needed; and will provide the location of testing sites and pharmacies. While we are ecstatic to be meeting in-person again, we hope everyone does their part to protect their own health and that of their fellow attendees.
