Update from the 39th Symposium Program Co-Chairs

As planning and preparation for the 39th International Symposium on Combustion continues, we are excited to share news from our recent visit to Vancouver. Thanks to the hard work of the peer reviewers and colloquium teams, program planning week was a success. From over 1500 submissions, around 540 papers have been selected for presentation. Competition for acceptance was tough, which resulted in the rejection of some quality papers for lack of combustion material. In the end, we are very excited about the quality and level of the technical program for the symposium.

Work-in-Progress Poster (WiPP) submissions are being accepted through 4 May 2022. Submit your one-page abstracts through the submission portal on the symposium website. There are several newly formed colloquia to which you can submit, detailed descriptions of which are available on the symposium site. The venue of the symposium allows for increased and enhanced exposure of the posters throughout the symposium week.

We are also looking forward to the amazing lineup of invited speakers and industry participants who have agreed to share their perspective and expertise with us during the symposium. In addition to the Hottel, Plenary, and Topical Review presentations, there are two industry roundtable sessions scheduled thanks to the efforts and assistance of the CI Industry Relations committee.

Vancouver offers amazing beauty and unlimited opportunities. Once again, we continue to plan for an in-person symposium. Travel conditions continue to improve regarding the entry to Canada. At the same time, we recognize that other countries face limited and increased travel restrictions. We encourage all participants to register to attend the symposium. If travel restrictions prohibit your in-person attendance, accommodations will be made for those who need to participate virtually.

We look forward to connecting once again with our colleagues and welcoming new members to the Combustion Symposium.

The meeting is hosted by Wayne State University. This is the continuation of a series of technical meetings that have been held, in person or virtually, since 1966. The meeting is planned as a fully in-person event, and will consist of an opening reception, plenary seminars, technical talks, a combustion art competition, and a banquet event. Read more here

International Workshop on Plasma-Assisted Combustion
As it stands now, lean combustion is a direct mean to decrease the pollutant emission of propulsion and energy production systems. Lean flames are however prone to instabilities which may be controlled by electrical discharges at the flame basis. This is an emerging solution, suitable to a wide range of combustion applications. To be held on-site in France from 9-10 June 2022, the goal of the workshop is to gather researchers conducting experiments and modeling of plasma-assisted combustion, and to identify the gap of knowledge so a framework of collaborative research can be established. Read more here.
28th International Colloquium on the Dynamics of Explosions and Reactive Systems (ICDERS)
ICDERS has been the premier international forum for the presentation of scientific contributions in the fields of explosions and unsteady combustion. The meeting encompasses and welcomes both basic and applied research in the form of oral or poster presentations. The colloquium will be held from 19-24 June 2022 at the University of Naples Federico II-Engineering Campus, Italy. Read more here.
The 2022 Princeton-Combustion Institute Summer School on Combustion and the Environment
The 2022 Princeton-Combustion Institute Summer School on Combustion and the Environment, scheduled for 19-24 June 2022, seeks "to provide the next generation of combustion researchers with a comprehensive knowledge in the technical areas of combustion theory, chemistry, experiment, computation and application." This year's summer school will offer the following courses: (1) Combustion Theory; (2) Combustion Chemistry; (3) Theoretical and Numerical Combustion; (4) Quantitative Laser Diagnostics for Combustion Chemistry and Propulsion. Canada Welcomes You

As of 1 April 2022, fully-vaccinated travelers no longer need to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test prior to entering Canada. Individuals still need to be fully vaccinated and must pre-load their travel plans thourgh the ArriveCan app 72 hours prior to their scheduled entry. However, restrictions remain as to which vaccines are acceptable to enter Canada, travelers must be able to provide a 14 day proposed quarantine plan, and travelers are subject to random COVID-19 testing upon arrival at Canadian airports.

Make sure you are aware of which vaccines are accepted for travel to Canada and what is needed to re-enter your country of origin. Information regarding Visa requirements, COVID-19 matters, the Vancouver International Airport, and local transportation can be found on the 39th Symposium website

Selections Made for Presentation at 39th Symposium

The Program Co-Chairs (PCCs), faced with the challenges of COVID, held a successful hybrid Program Planning Week. With a large number of excellent submissions, the colloquium teams were responsible for analyzing the manuscripts, reviews and rebuttals, and performing the difficult task of rendering decision recommendations for the PCCs. After thorough and intense review, the PCCs selected over 500 papers for presentation. Accept and reject notifications were sent to authors during the first week of April.

Authors who intend to present at the symposium must complete the Affirmation to Present by 27 April 2022. All authors will again be required to submit a pre-recorded version of their presentation and accompanying slides prior to the symposium. Details and instructions will be sent directly to the presenting author after the affirmation to present deadline passes.

Work in Progress Posters (WiPP) Abstract Submissions Now Open

Individuals interested in presenting a Work in Progress Poster (WiPP) at the symposium can submit their one-page abstract through the symposium website. WiPP abstracts are being accepted through 4 May 2022. Authors are encouraged to submit abstracts for posters in any of the 13 designated colloquia, which include some newly redesigned definitions, click here for more details. Authors will be notified of WiPP decisions by 11 May 2022. Posters will be on display and available for viewing throughout the symposium week and authors are encouraged to entertain attendee questions during the designated poster viewing times.

Registration Information

Information regarding registration for the 39th Symposium is available on the symposium website. The registration portal will be available for use soon. 39th ISOC Excursion at a Glance: Grouse Mountain
As part of the 39th International Symposium on Combustion's excursion, symposium attendees are invited to see Grouse Mountain. Located just 15 minutes from downtown Vancouver, this "premier attraction offers the perfect destination for a truly rewarding and memorable experience".
Visiting the Vancouver Aquarium and Honoring our Colleagues
The Vancouver Aquarium will serve as the backdrop for the biennial reception. Symposium attendees will experience a new style of "banquet". The sit-down dinner is being eliminated in favor of a more inclusive and social atmosphere. Attendees can enjoy the attractions of the aquarium while mingling with colleagues, sampling local food and drink, and honoring the achievements of their fellow scientists. The Vancouver Aquarium is located a short drive from the Convention Centre and contracted hotels, and can easily be reached by foot.
